Habibul Bashar’s new mandate

The Bengali Roots Sports Desk

For the Bangladeshi diaspora worldwide, cricket is more than just entertainment: it is a powerful cultural unifier. And precisely because the national team is going through a power transition, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has taken very firm steps to prevent this from happening.

The BCB is hoping to bank on a legacy of perseverance and strategic vision by appointing Habibul Bashar as its new chief selector, who is also the first Bangladeshi to cross the 3,000-run milestone in Test cricket. This so-called man of a thousand memories can be put in Sumon. A Panel Built on Pedigree

Not only a reshuffle, but also a strategic mix of generations. For the 53-year-old, Bashar is joining the highest echelon with a resume that spans both the men’s and women’s panels of selection, and it is as if he were meeting an old friend. Hasibul Hossain also comes from the previous school.

Nevertheless, the addition of Naeem Islam and Nadif Chowdhury denotes a new analytical trend. Naeem, with more than 20,000 runs and an astonishing 34 first-class centuries, brings the inside track on the grind needed for endurance in this long format.

Nadif, meanwhile, transitions away from age-group scouting. He provides a direct pipeline to the Tigers’ future. “Bashar’s has been more than a title change for the BCB,” commented a statement on the board’s official website, “It has been a clear long-term strategy that reaches heraldically back into our past from the present and stretches vainly forward into our future.” BCB Official Statement

The Road to 2027

The mandate’s duration makes this selection extraordinarily important to Bangladeshis of overseas residence (NRBs) who follow their team from London to New York. This panel will see them through the 2027 ICC Cricket World Cup in South Africa.

The BCB is allowing Bashar and the new team from here on in to take their time in assembling a team of players who can survive the testing conditions of South Africa – bouncy pitches and scorching pace – that have been traditionally difficult for the Tigers.

Analysis: A Change in Philosophy?

Bashar’s selection implies a desire for stability and authority. Unlike previous selections, when selectors have often been criticised for their lack of independence, Habibul’s former captaincy confers upon him a kind of “soft” authority which allows him to negotiate between what the board expects and what the captain needs on the field.

With Naeem Islam’s figures and Nadif Chowdhury’s eye for youth talent, we at The Bengali Roots consider the present members of the panel to form a “war room” which is balanced and has the necessary level-headedness to handle the high-pressure levels of international cricket.

Editor’s Note:

As Bangladesh lines up a testing international calendar curtain-raiser to the 2027 season, all attention is focused on whether the new panel of selectors can bridge the divide between native dominance and overseas continuity. In the eyes of ‘The Bengali Roots’, Bashar’s leadership is a stride toward the professionalisation that every fan can look to with confidence.
