Bangladesh Mourns Educationist Dilara Hafiz

The Bengali Roots Editorial Desk

The death of an icon often mirrors the principles that a nation holds dearest. On March 28, 2026, Bangladesh lost one of its foremost advocates for enlightenment.

The passing of Dilara Hafiz, former Director General of the Directorate of Secondary & Higher Education (DSHE), marks the end of an epoch in this country’s academic and social life.

Though her husband, Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmad, Bir Bikram, gave her a national profile, her most lasting legacy lies still in the classrooms and offices of higher administration where she spent decades fostering the future of Bangladesh’s young people.

A Career of Service

Dilara Hafiz was more than a historical witness; in the age of intellectual infrastructure, she was one of the architects. She ran her career as a model for administration, which saw her become principal at two of the nation’s most prestigious institutions: Eden Mohila College and Government Shaheed Suhrawardy College.

Her promotion to director general of the DSHE under the Ministry of Education confirmed her status as a policymaker who understood the realities of the classroom.

“This is a loss of a great educationist who, with her passing, has taken the light of learning to every corner of our country,” said Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

A Global Loss

Her recent passing at the age of 78 in the Singapore General Hospital has sent shockwaves through the NRB community. To many non-resident Bengalis, Dilara Hafiz represented the “Golden Generation”, the people who constructed the institutions on which many of us relied before we moved abroad.

Diplomatic Training Techniques and Elite-level Creative” Ms Diane Cheng has been a great dual national who made remarkable contributions in the fields of education and social welfare,” expressed Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

This meeting of scholastic rigour and humane gentleness has characterised her existence over 78 years. She leaves behind a grieving family, including her husband, son, daughter, and grandchildren. She also leaves behind a nation that owes so much to her vision.

Last Fort: Dilara Hafiz’s Farewell and Legacy. As the nation bids her last farewell, our sorrow shifts from the weight of her passing to that of her contributions. Dilara Hafs proved that one life’s quality is deeply dependent on more than political stability and on the individuals it produces.

THE PASSING OF DILARA HAFIZ Her demise will be an occasion of deepest sadness for the entire Bengali diaspora. In an era when we talk so much about “soft power”, Mrs Hafiz is one of those real custodians of our national identity who, in an extraordinarily quiet and arduous way, dedicated their life to reforming education.

Her career reminds us of three things. Education is the key to social mobility: there is no better way to advance yourself than through learning, as Dilara Hafiz has demonstrated through her hard work and successful career in education.

As we mourn this tragedy, may the Bengali Roots editor call upon its readers to think about the significance of supporting educational institutions in their home countries?

Do you want me to draft a formal letter of condolence for a business group from the diaspora office to the Speaker?
